Laser Eye Surgery – Complete Freedom from Glasses and Contacts Can Be Found with Laser Vision Correction

without comments

With the anti aging craze, and the cosmetic industry boom, it is easy to forget about one of the most common ailments that men and women suffer with today—poor vision. Glasses and contacts were the norm for so many years, men and women easily became used to the idea that they’d always need assistance with impaired vision. After years of research and development however, this is no longer the case. Laser eye surgery is an innovative procedure that is designed to help men and women regain perfect vision so that the aid of glasses or contacts is no longer necessary. Just imagine, after years of relying on visual aids, waking up the day after treatment and being able to see your alarm clock clearly; the results are that instantaneous!

To most, laser eye surgery is better known as LASIK; this common acronym stands for Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis. The LASIK procedure was developed to help men and women restore perfect vision. While most individuals don’t know much about how vision works, the structural components of the eye are very complex, therefore if these components do not work perfectly in sync, vision will not be precise. Laser vision correction is an innovative treatment that can quickly restore perfect vision to the eye.

By now you’re probably wondering how the laser vision correction procedure works. When men and women have perfect vision, the cornea is shaped in such a way that the focus of the eye points directly to the retina. Imperfect vision is due to imperfections in the corneal shape. The laser procedure works to target and reshape the cornea in order to change the eye’s focal point so that it focuses directly on the retina. Patients who suffer with, moderate to high degrees of myopia (nearsightedness), low to moderate degrees of hyperopia (farsightedness), thick corneas, and/or astigmatism associated with myopia can all find relief with laser vision correction.

The surgery itself is actually pretty straightforward. Before the treatments begin, patients will first undergo an eye scan. This scan will create a detailed map of each eye in order to determine the patients’ corneal shape as well as their exact prescription. The map works to both determine whether or not patients are ideal candidates, and create a treatment regimen that will help to restore perfect vision. Once the scan is reviewed and patients are qualified, the laser technician will program the scan results into the laser in order to calibrate the laser settings. At this point, it is time for the procedure to begin.

The actual procedure will take about six to eight minutes to complete, but most patients are in the room for about half an hour. The surgery will begin with the administration of anesthetic drops to numb the eye, after which a lid speculum will be put in place in order to keep the eyelids open during treatment. Once set, the surgeon will utilize an automated microsurgical instrument called a microkeratome to cut a flap in the cornea that equals about ¼ of its overall depth. By doing this, the laser has access to the area of the cornea that needs reshaping. The laser will pulse a tightly focused beam of light onto the surface of the exposed cornea and will vaporize corneal tissue in order to refocus the eye. The eye scan results will determine the size, position and number of pulses emitted by the laser in order to control how much of the cornea is actually removed. Once completed, the corneal flap will be replaced and will quickly conform to the new cornea shape.

It can take a few days for the eyes to fully heal, but patients have experienced better vision almost instantaneously. Like with any medical procedure, there are risks associated with laser eye surgery, so it is important to discuss all possible outcomes with your surgeon before committing to treatment. For those men and women who are sick and tired of relying on glasses and contacts, laser vision correction is a fantastic method for improving overall vision.
